Battle of Britain: The Germans planned on overtaking Britain with ‘Operation Sea Lion’. The German air force, Luftwaffe bombed London city (‘The Blitz’) and the RAF, the British air force bombed Berlin. The Luftwaffe was unable to defeat the RAF, who was supported from the Air force of the Commonwealth, and Germany lost the battle of Britain. 23 000 people lost their lives in the Battle of Britain.
Operation Barbarossa: 1941, Hitler launched a massive attack on the soviet Union (even though they had a non aggression pact). The Soviet Union was trusting Germany on the non aggression pact and was not prepared for the attack. Germany was able to march deep into Russia, but the german soldiers were not prepared for the extreme weather conditions. At Stalingrad the were stuck with the massive winter and could not run back. This forced Germany to surrender in 1943. The soviet Union now joined the allied side against Germany.
Dieppe Raid: Disaster: Allies try to launch in Dieppe, France but the German defence easily keeps up and the Allied miserably lost that battle and pay a high price of 907 soldiers getting killed, 600 getting wounded and 1900 soldiers taken prisoner.
Italian Campaign: Allies plan to recapitulate Europe through Italy and Sicily. They had the Advantage of North Africa, but Italy and Sicily defended themselves really well. This battle costed the Allies many lifes and turned out to be a big struggle. After two years they finally invaded Italy.
D-Day: Allies launched a full scale invasion of Europe ‘Operation Overload’ Launched on 5 beaches in France, and making their way through europe with the Battle of Scheldt and The battle of Rhineland they dominated the Axis and fought Germany out of the Netherlands.
